A message from our hosts, the “young crowd” of Colm, Liam, Jack, Katie and Ciarán (don’t ask for ID):

With age comes wisdom, said Oscar Wilde. And according to George Bernard Shaw, youth is wasted on the young. It’s true that different generations don’t always see eye to eye. We don’t even use the same words.

There’s a lot to misunderstand. Boomers think Millennials are entitled because we like to work from home. Gen Z think Boomers are gullible because they will 100% open the dodgy email and send money to a lord in Namibia. Gen Alpha will never meet us in the pub to discuss this, because they have early yoga.

But that’s exactly why we have so much to learn from each other. And that’s what February Croonerista is all about. Finding the lyrical wisdom of someone born in a different generation than you were.

This Valentine’s Day eve, we invite you to take up residency in another era. Set up camp and look around. Slag the lyrics, if you want, but sing them.

We’ve got a song from 1964. Martin has promised Taylor Swift. We’re reaching across time in both directions to see what we’ll find. Inviting all ages to the same party to find what words we do have in common. Bonus points for songs about love, in any of its forms, including friendship.

When it comes to love, the wisdom of age is easy to define. It’s built on experience and heartbreak and 40 years married and learning from mistakes. But the wisdom of youth is that it still has starry eyes. No one has given up yet. They’ve been hurt, and it’s a dramatic story, but they’re excited. They want to find out what’s next. They still believe. (The eejits.)

Ah no, let’s all believe. On Friday from 9pm, we’ll sing both the heartbreak and the hope of the ages. Every age, that is.

See yis there,

The young ones

P.S. If you’re stuck for ideas, ask ChatGPT. (seriously, it’ll give you a list of ideas, it’s how we got our opener)

Also, please wire €2,000 to the bank account we will send separately.
