Our summer in the suburbs saw the kick-off of The Works Festival.

A slightly different format this year. Instead of everything jam packed into one day (which was a very big as for all) the event spreads 2 days.

Quirky, entertaining, electric, featuring a full blend of music, prose, poetry, bands, food and banter.

The festival opens its doors to young musicians and artists, giving them exposure and a platform to showcase theie best selves.

A couple of younger musicians engaging with the volunteers at the bar nervously commented that they’ll be taking part in their first gigs in town soon, October in the Grand Social. They were impressed at the range of musicians, style and quality of musicianship. Why not perform here was our quip? I think we’ll be seeing them back, armed with instruments.

This grassroots movement is a brilliant showcase for the budding musician, the seasoned musician and the young musician. What could be better than encouraging the youth to step up, grow in confidence and entertain us all. Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh siad.

A few little tweaks this year really makes a difference. It brings us bags of music, food and entertainment from a variety of angles.

The whole building becomes a hub of activity with rest areas, a green room and with something happening all the time, either in the hall, lounge or bar. Visiting tourists were very evident and all enjoyed what was described by one as a very friendly unique experience in a fantastic space. They hailed form Argentina, Paraguay, Germany, Sweden, Czechia, Spain, Italy, Poland and China.

The building really lends itself to this type of setup, attracting a fantastic crowd with a very casual and overwhelmingly friendly atmosphere adding to the night. Some very familiar faces popped in to have a look and chat.

Just a few shots to give a feel to the atmosphere.

Overall a great experience with more to come today. Doors opening from 16:00, events from 17:00 and entertainment ’till midnight…
