The sun is blazing and the full glory of global warming is thrust upon us. Excellent sunshine, excellent spirits… and we’re off!

Nothing like an auld Irish “rince” to get the very early birds going…
Some extraordinary finds emerged in The Works Festival this year. Chief Keegans’s own take on Eleanor Rigby radiated through the Long Hall last night. Many others stepped up today. Spologies to people I couldn’t fit in as there’s only so much you can fim when also volunteering in the bar operation over the 2 days. Adam should have a slicker film reel up and running soon, which we will share. Many thanks to Adam and the Smithfield Creatives and all of the performs who cam, stood up, performed and entertained.

Lightning Phil and the Sinisters

Lightning Phil and the Sinisters.
Didn’t they all look as if they were enjoying the session. A highly proficient blues-jazz quartet. Their drummer with an off-beat shuffles, a bassist that could line up with any jazz, trad. Polka band or death metal act with his silky smooth lines. A cool frontman with a Don Baker style appeal and let’s not forget the guitarist. Highly polished and intricate lines with beautiful fills and notes fluttering in the background.
He looked cool, his muscicianship was cool and that beautiful guitar (which looked like a Gibson Les Paul Faded Vintage Cherry Sunburst) was the epitome of cool!

Kenan Flannery

Kenan Flannery from Cabra has us in stiches. His effortless bluegrass style has me thinking about the effortless of Tim Lerch’s playing style.
Kenan’s hilarious renditions about his touring through 23 states of the USA in a car, with a person he only met online from Montana, was hugely entertaining. Throw in his stage presence, rawly ascerbic wit and sagacious insights into global warming, “the orange man”, california on fire and The Kansas Queen loves Ketamine… you were entertained. The thing that struck us is that he was in many ways an Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson and Tim Lerch rolled up into one but possessing a natural comedic touch. He was on fire, like California 😉 There must be room in the market for this style. If the cards fall right for him, there’s no doubt he can be a transatlantic megastar.

A big shout out to the supporting partner “High Noon” who supported the acts by supplying refreshments. Check them out. They’ve taken the good ole US of A by storm and are attempting to now crack a nation of hardened drinkers. The pineapple vodka soda is surprisingly refreshing and light.

A tip of the hat to Denis and crew. Although this was a partner of Smithfield Creatives, we were impressed buy the kit, quality of sound reproduction and flexibility of the crew. Very easy to work with. Kudos!
